IFC Formal Recruitment 2026

Formal Recruitment takes place right after Welcome Week and allows students to tour each fraternity and meet some of the university's fraternity men. Learn more down below

What is Formal Recruitment?

Fraternity recruitment offers potential members the chance to connect with fellow Gophers who share similar passions, explore the distinct core values of each chapter, and build lifelong bonds that extend far past graduation. While getting involved during your freshman year is ideal for maximizing your Greek experience, many students successfully rush as upperclassmen.

Formal recruitment begins on September 7th, 2026, with a Town Hall hosted by the IFC Executive Board, followed by a Meet & Greet event where PNMs can meet all participating chapters in an Org Fair-style setting. At the conclusion of the Meet & Greet, PNMs will submit an interest form selecting 6–12 chapters they would like to continue visiting throughout recruitment.

From September 8th–10th, PNMs will attend scheduled 25-minute chapter visits to learn more about each organization and its members. Participation in these visits is required to remain eligible for a bid through formal recruitment. Each chapter will have one time slot. If you are unable to attend that chapter visit, with a valid reason, you must notify Tate Narr (narr0026@umn.edu) before the event. On Friday, September 11th, 2026, chapters will host Open House events, giving PNMs another opportunity to revisit chapters and individually narrow down their preferences. A PNM can also visit chapters that were not originally on their selected list of chapter visits, as long as they notify IFC in advance.

The final day of Formal Recruitment takes place on Sunday, September 13th, 2026, during Invite-Only events, where PNMs can have more in-depth conversations with chapters before bids officially begin to be distributed. PNMs will be notified by Saturday, September 12th, of which chapters they are invited back to via email and/or text message. Following the conclusion of formal recruitment, informal recruiting will begin on September 16th.

1. Academics

1. The four-year graduation rate of Greek community members is higher than any other organization on campus, as well as the general student population at the University of Minnesota

2.  Each chapter has its own scholarship program, which often includes study hours, minimum GPA requirements, and recognition for outstanding academic achievement.

3. Weekly chapter study nights at campus libraries and internal academic support finals are great opportunities to study with friends and connect with people in your classes.

4. Members of the Greek Community have already taken classes available at the University of Minnesota and are able to offer advice concerning professors, study tips, and their own experiences in the classroom.

2. Leadership

• The leadership opportunities within the Greek community are plentiful. Greeks are encouraged to further enrich their experience by holding positions within their chapters, as well as the governing councils.

• Many chapter members participate in various leadership development programs such as the IFC Leadership Institute. Greeks are also continually involved in other campus organizations and programs, such as Welcome Week, Minnesota Student Association, and many others.

• The relationships fostered within the Greek community offer countless networking opportunities

3. Service

• As the largest student group on campus, the Greek community prides itself in its dedication to philanthropy and service within the Minneapolis and St. Paul community. Annually, chapters donate on average over 40,000 hours of service!

• Annually, chapters donate on average more than $240,000 to various charitable organizations.

• Each chapter plans and hosts events to raise funds and awareness for their chosen cause. Many are large-scale events, which members from other chapters within the Greek community attend and support.

4. Brotherhood

• The bonds made between chapter members and other members of the Greek community are truly unique. Members often refer to their chapter houses as a “home away from home” and their brothers as family.

• Chapters cultivate brotherhood by organizing events and outings, such as study tables at the library, fraternity socials, movie nights, and many other unique and fun events!

• Brotherhood also continues long after members graduate. Chapters have strong nationwide alumni networks that allow brothers to connect and support one another.
